Waterfalls, black beaches and glacier lagoons: driving all the way round Iceland, and how to keep the cost down.
Route 1, the Ring Road, runs 1,332 kilometres round Iceland. You can drive it in a week, but eight or nine days leaves time for detours and bad weather, and there will be bad weather.
Go anticlockwise and the south coast comes first: Seljalandsfoss, which you can walk behind, the black sand at Reynisfjara, and the icebergs at Jökulsárlón, which wash up on the beach across the road. The east fjords are quiet and beautiful. The north has whale watching from Húsavík and the lunar landscape around Mývatn.
Keeping costs down
A campervan is your bed and your kitchen, which matters in one of the world’s most expensive countries. Campsites cost 2,000 to 3,000 krónur each; wild camping in a vehicle is not allowed. Shop at Bónus and Krónan, and fill up at the cheaper Orkan and Atlantsolía stations.
